Revolutionary Fashion at SM Mall of Asia: TernoCon 2024 Exhibits Legendary Work by Jojie Lloren, Cary Santiago, Jaggy Glarino

Following TernoCon: Kasarinlan, Kultura, Kasuotan, twenty-four ensembles fresh off the runway are on display at SM Mall of Asia’s Main Atrium until June 23. Designed and masterfully tailored by legendary fashion icons Jojie Lloren, Cary Santiago, and Jaggy Glarino, the ternos on display promote Filipino pride, art, and culture in honor of the 126th Philippine Independence Day. From romantic ternos inspired by Filipino indigenous wear to bold interpretations of our national icons, the TernoCon KKK exhibit takes you on a journey through revitalized Filipino fashion unlike any other.

Catch the TernoCon: Kasarinlan, Kultura, Kasuotan exhibit at SM Mall of Asia’s Main Atrium until June 23!

TernoCon KKK, presented by Bench lifestyle + clothing, SM Supermalls, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), was a fashion showcase held at SM Mall of Asia’s Museo del Galeón last June 10. The three trailblazing designers – Jojie Lloren, Cary Santiago, and Jaggy Glarino – each represented the islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, respectively.

Jaggy Glarino’s “Lemlunay” collection is inspired by the rich and diverse heritage of Mindanao, and features ternos masterfully adorned with indigenous weaves, solihiya, and headpieces of the region.

Don’t miss out on “Ubra” by Jaggy Glarino, a terno mini dress with sculptural Tboli beaded accents.

On exhibit are selected ensembles from the fashion show. Avant-garde designer Jaggy Glarino’s exhibit “Lemlunay” is inspired by the rich heritage of Mindanao. His pieces feature indigenous weaves and headpieces paired with the elegant silhouettes of the traditional terno.

In “A Lullaby for My Mother”, Jojie Lloren presents a poignant collection of minimalist and exquisitely-constructed ternos that pay tribute to his beloved mother and the Philippine motherland.

Catch Lloren’s “Fight and Surrender” – a terno-sleeved top and skirt made of muslin – at SM Mall of Asia’s Main Atrium until June 23.

Jojie Lloren’s collection titled “A Lullaby for My Mother” visually narrates a series of emotional states ranging from “Denial” to “Fight and Surrender” to “Bliss” through elegant ternos and headpieces.

Cary Santiago’s “Ikonograpiya” is a collection of bold interpretations of our nation’s most prominent icons. From the bahay kubo to the jeepney, the Cebu-based couturier manipulates fabric into intricate masterpieces of showcasing Filipino culture.

Cebu-based couturier Cary Santiago’s collection “Ikonograpiya” draws inspiration from the colors of the Philippine flag, featuring monochromatic pieces that each embody an iconic Filipino symbol.

Don’t miss out on a truly elevated cultural experience! See the works up close to fully marvel at the intricate details that go into revolutionary fashion. The exhibit remains at SM Mall of Asia’s Main Atrium (across Bench and The French Baker) until June 23, Sunday.

Upon closer look of Cary Santiago’s jeepney-inspired terno gown, miniature horses stand on the dashboard.

Food is one of Iloilo’s biggest year-round attractions with La Paz Batchoy, a noodle soup made from pork and beef broth mixed with crisp pork skin and assorted organs, and fresh seafoods are among the must-try ones. The city is also home to many Spanish-colonial churches, grand vintage houses, and old commercial and institutional buildings.
The Iloilo Dinagyang Festival is one of the Philippines’ biggest religious and cultural festivals but equally exciting events include Paraw Regatta Festival, Jaro Fiesta and Chinese New Year.

Pristine beaches are located in Northern Iloilo where the islands of Gigantes, Concepcion, Ajuy, and Sicogon are among the most visited ones. The southern coast of Iloilo, meanwhile, boasts of well-preserved marine sanctuaries and sand beaches.

AirAsia Announces Davao to Kuala Lumpur‎ Flight

DAVAO, 21 JULY 2017 - AirAsia, the world’s best low-cost airline, has announced its latest route to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with four times weekly direct flights from Davao commencing 21 January 2018.

Operated exclusively by AirAsia Berhad (flight code AK), the new route marks as the fourth direct route from the Philippines to Malaysia after Manila, Cebu and Kalibo.

The launch event was attended by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes, DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez, Ambassador Alfredo Yao, one of the Filipino investors of AirAsia Philippines and AirAsia Philippines CEO Captain Dexter Comendador.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said, “We see Davao City as a major point of growth in the international market, especially with agriculture being the city’s largest industry. Our aim for the city is also to grow it to become a hub for financial, tourism, service and education in Mindanao. The introduction of the direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Davao could not be more timely and is a key step in this direction to empower local players across various economic activities.

AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes, who was one of the speakers at the conference said, “Davao has a special place in my heart. It was one of the first cities we flew to when we started our Philippines operations in 2012. In fact, Clark-Davao, which we pioneered, was one of the two maiden routes when we started AirAsia Philippines five years ago. Since then, we have worked to strengthen our network in Davao. In this year alone, we have launched new flights from Davao to Cebu, Palawan and Boracay, and enabled Fly-Thru via Cebu to international destinations such as Singapore, Taipei and Seoul.

Today marks the start of the next phase of our commitment to Davao. We believe Davao has the potential to be the international gateway for Asean to the southern Philippines, beginning with this new route to Kuala Lumpur. We strongly support the development of cities outside Metro Manila, and we are confident that by increasing connectivity and accessibility to affordable air travel, AirAsia can help play a role in boosting economic growth in the south. We can't do it alone and we need airports to share in the responsibility, but together we can make His Excellency President Duterte’s vision of a more prosperous Philippines come true.”

To celebrate the new route, AirAsia is all-in-fares from as low as Php99* one-way are available for booking from 21 July 2017 until 30 July 2017 for the travel period from 21 December  2017 to 28 August 2018. Kuala Lumpur or “KL” is the perfect representation of the harmoniously multi-racial Malaysia. From its humble beginnings of a tin mining city, the ‘muddy confluence’ has progressively transformed into one of the most developed capital cities of Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur’s world-famous landmark, the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC), and the surrounding attractions that host cultural elements from the various ethnicities represented in Malaysia are some must-visit sites when visiting the capital city. Places to visit such as the 421m tall KL Tower, Central Market (Pasar Seni), Petaling Street, KLCC, Malaysia Tourism Centre and Bukit Bintang are all accessible from the free GoKL bus. A day trip to visit other nearby attractions such as Port Dickson, Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Bukit Tinggi, Putrajaya, Batu Caves, and Sunway Lagoon are also ideal from the city centre.

Guests who wish to explore more of Malaysia can also take advantage of AirAsia’s domestic network to the idyllic resort island Langkawi; or fly further to the tip of Borneo Island Kota Kinabalu to marvel at Southeast Asia’s highest peak Mount Kinabalu, discover the mysterious Mulu Caves as well as dive into the world famous underwater world at Sipadan Island.

*Promotional all-in fares quoted are for one-way travel only inclusive of taxes. Terms and conditions apply.

Tony Fernandes recognized for his contribution to the growth of Asean and U.S.-ASEAN relationship

AirAsia Philippines - CebuStreetJournal.com

Tony Fernandes of AirAsia

SAN FRANCISCO, 22 FEBRUARY 2016 – Tony Fernandes, co-founder and Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia has been recognised by the US-ASEAN Business Council with the Fourth Pillar Award for his extraordinary contribution towards the growth of Asean and the U.S.-ASEAN relationship.

The award was presented by Mr. Keith Williams, President & CEO, UL LLC and Chairman, U.S.-ASEAN Business Council to Tony Fernandes, making him the second recipient after the Administration of U.S. President Barack Obama. The ASEAN Economic Community Conference 2016 dinner reception was held in San Francisco with key business leaders and government officials from across ASEAN and the U.S. in attendance.

The ASEAN charter speaks to a community comprising three pillars: political security, economic and socio-cultural. The Fourth Pillar Award is presented to a person or organization representing the “fourth pillar”, a person that has made an extraordinary contribution towards the growth of ASEAN as well as fostering better U.S.-ASEAN relationship, effectively making the foundation of ASEAN stronger through their focus and involvement.

Tony Fernandes, who is also a member of the ASEAN Business Club Advisory Council said, “The theme of this conference – Asia’s Best Kept Secret: The ASEAN Economic Community – says it all. ASEAN is a dream and if we put the ASEAN people first, who knows what we can achieve. When you combine all ten member countries into a single market and production base, you are tapping into a community of over 600 million people. The potential this region holds is immense, and as a truly ASEAN brand, we will continue to lobby and spearhead ASEAN integration, especially but not  limited to the aviation, travel and tourism industries.”

“I believe it is time for ASEAN to take a bold step towards commonality and standardisation. There is an urgent need of one ASEAN regulator to ensure a unified ASEAN standard. The current process of relying on consensus that require approval from all 10 countries should be reviewed so important initiatives move forward.”

“It is a true honour to be recognised by the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council for what we have done as an ASEAN brand, but there is much more to do. Our hope is for all ten member countries’ governments to come together as harmonisation allows for more efficient use of resources, achieve better economies of scale, contribute towards the reduction of unit costs and lead towards faster growth for the region,” added Fernandes.

The AirAsia Group, led by Tony Fernandes and partner Datuk Kamarudin Meranun has grown into an ASEAN powerhouse with operations connecting all ten ASEAN member countries in addition to providing one of the widest route network across Asia, Australasia and beyond via its long-haul operations.

The U.S.-ASEAN Business Council, founded in 1984, is the premier advocacy organization for U.S. corporations operating within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The Council works to elevate the importance of U.S.-ASEAN economic relationship to American and ASEAN public policy makers and business leaders.

The Council works across all ten member countries of ASEAN, representing 152 major U.S. corporations.

Classic Mexican Telenovelas on BEAM Ch 31

Good news for lovers of classic Mexican telenovelas who are looking for an alternative to local and Korean standard drama fare.

Tagalog-dubbed hits La Madrasta (The Stepmother), Palabra de Mujer (A Woman’s Word), and Big Love (Llena de Amor) now air daily over BEAM UHF Free-to-Air Channel 31 in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Baguio, Naga, Iloilo, and Zamboanga.  The programs are also available on cable in NCR via SkyCable Channel 72, Destiny Cable Channel 80, Cable Link Channel 82, and CableStar Channel 4, and Skycable Channel 20 in Cebu, Davao, and Baguio.  Airing starts daily from 5am - 7am and 7pm to 11pm with catch-up marathon on weekends in the same time slots.

Hit Mexican telenovela classic La Madrasta returns to the small screen with Victoria Ruffo and Cesar Evora.
La Madrasta, which starred Victoria Ruffo and Cesar Evora, was an unexpected success when it was broadcast in Mexico back in 2005.  The drama is about Maria who was wrongly-accused of murder.  After many years in prison, she returned to be with her children and exact revenge on his husband Esteban who turned his back on her during the ordeal only to later be torn between her desire for justice and finding the strength to forgive.

A Woman’s Word, on the other hand, premiered in 2007 and is also the name of a TV talk show featured in the series.  It follows the intertwined lives of Vanesa, Fernanda, Paulina, and Matilde who despite their very different social backgrounds, embarked together on an exciting adventure in search of their personal fulfillment as professionals, and more importantly, as women. It was top-billed by Edith GonzĆ”lez, Yadhira Carrillo, Ludwika Paleta, and Lidia Ɓvila.

The lovely cast of A Woman’s Word, namely: Edith Gonzales, Yadhira Carrillo, Ludwika Paleta and Lidia Avila.
Meanwhile, Big Love which was aired in 2010, tells the story of Marianela, who may be huge in weight but is very positive in life even though she lived most of her childhood without the love and warmth of a family.  Played by Ariadne Diaz, Marianela experienced struggles in countless family intrigues that led her to live with her aunt in Spain.  After her aunt’s death, she went back to Mexico filled with optimism and self-confidence, determined to find her big love.

Ariadne Diaz playfully enacts a scene in Big Love.
The Spanish telenovela trend in the Philippines started in 1994 but began dwindling in popularity about a decade-and-a-half later as Asian dramas took over.  However, it continues to have some following particularly among young-to-middle aged women.

BEAM Channel 31 is a free-to-air TV being operated by Broadcast Enterprises and Affiliated Media, Inc. (BEAM), owned by a joint consortium led by Bethlehem Holdings, Inc., an investee of Globe Telecom’s Retirement Fund.
