SM Foundation turns over 109th school building in Zamboanga City

In its continuing mission to support education and community development, SM Foundation proudly turned over its 109th school building nationwide to Sta. Barbara Central School in Zamboanga City on December 18, 2024.

The newly constructed two-storey, four-classroom school building is designed to provide a conducive learning environment and is equipped with modern facilities. Each classroom features electric fans, toilets, wash basins, and a thoughtful provision of left-handed chairs crafted by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). In addition, the building includes a ground-floor PWD-friendly toilet complete with handrails and wash basins, a dedicated clinic, a mini library, and a room for arts and music. Handwashing facilities were also installed to promote proper hygiene among students.

During the turnover ceremony, SM City Zamboanga’s Assistant Mall Manager, Jodie Durens, shared heartfelt remarks on the impact of SM Foundation’s initiatives in the community. “Having been part of the SM family for years, I have personally witnessed how SM transforms communities. Time and time again, I’ve seen how our collective efforts—from scholarships for deserving students, outreach programs, medical missions, to projects like today’s school building turnover—create a ripple effect of positive change,” said Durens.

This milestone reflects SM Foundation’s unwavering commitment to advancing education and improving lives across the Philippines. Through initiatives like the School Building Program, SM Foundation ensures that communities, especially underserved ones, have access to quality education in well-equipped facilities.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting and turnover ceremony was graced by SM Foundation led by Ms. Linda Atayde, Executive Director for Education, SM City Zamboanga Assistant Mall Manager, Ms. Jodie Durens, SM City Mindpro Mall Manager, Ms. Aileen Ann Villa-Enriquez, DepEd Zamboanga City Schools Division Chief for School Governance and Operation, Dr. Basilio Uy, and Sta. Barbara Central School Principal, Dr. Ana Liza DZ Martin.

The donation to Sta. Barbara Central School underscores SM Foundation’s dedication to uplifting the lives of Filipino students and fostering a brighter future for the nation.
