TernoCon Takes Over MOA Sky Football Field

Heritage fashion gets sporty in this open-air cultural runway

Step into a new era of Filipiniana fashion as TernoCon Palaro unfolds on the grand turf of the MOA Sky Football Pitch this July 27, 2025. With the theme “TernoCon Palaro,” this year’s showcase invites audiences to experience the terno like never before—fluid, sporty, and alive with movement.

What happens when Filipino tradition meets the playful energy of a football field? The result is a striking visual celebration of heritage reinterpreted for a generation in motion.

An Inspired Collaboration: SM Supermalls, Bench, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines

Following the momentum of past TernoCon special edition projects, including 2024’s Kasarinlan, Kultura, Kasuotan and 2023’s Paskong Ternocon, this year’s edition continues the strong creative alliance between SM Supermalls, Bench, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Together, these three institutions are reshaping how cultural narratives are told through fashion—bringing the terno beyond the runway and into the public sphere in powerful, unexpected ways.

Meet the Designers: Contemporary Visions of Filipiniana

This year, six trailblazing Filipino designers take center field with collections that reflect personal heritage, regional identity, and bold design philosophies. Each one presents a capsule collection composed of modern takes on the terno, balintawak, kimona, and barong reimagined through the lens of sport and movement.

Hannah Adrias

Gold medalist of Ternocon 2020, Hannah Adrias continues to reimagine Filipiniana for her generation in a collection that taps into early 1980s aesthetics through a contemporary lens.

Glyn Alley Magtibay

Glyn Alley Magtibay made a strong impression as a Finalist in Ternocon 2023 with her ternos that utilized X-ray films. For Palaro, her collection called Intramurals conjures the spirit of school sporting events combined with the graphic boldness of hand-woven indigenous textiles.

Jo Ann Bitagcol

Jo Ann Bitagcol blurs the line between formal and casual dressing as well as traditional boundaries of men and women’s wear in a collection called Liga. While tapping into our collective idea of nostalgia, she still manages to infuse garments with a sense of ease and contemporaneity.

Len Cabili

Len Cabili of Filip+Inna is at the forefront of slow fashion and indigenous crafts in the Philippines. For her collection called Basketball Parabola, she taps into the country’s obsession with the sport and the curved lines that are central to the game.

Renz Reyes

Renz Reyes translated the intricate details of traditional Filipino garments such as the traje de mestiza, terno, and barong into the contemporary language of linearity, streamlined sports silhouettes, and utilitarian aspect of tailoring.

Carl Jan Cruz

Carl Jan Cruz’s Palaro collection is rooted in the idea of transforming found objects, specifically found garments and archival Bench T-shirts made in the Philippines, into something intentional, experimental, and playful, yet still grounded in the brand’s DNA and the essence of the terno and other forms of Filipiniana.

The MOA Sky Football Pitch: Fashion’s Newest Playground

For the first time in Ternocon history, the show will take place on an outdoor sports field. The MOA Sky Football Pitch becomes more than just a venue—it’s a symbol of how the terno continues to evolve. With the Manila Bay sunset as its backdrop, the event promises a visual spectacle where movement, fashion, and Filipino identity intersect.

TernoCon’s Ongoing Legacy

Since its debut, TernoCon has been a vibrant creative laboratory for Filipino fashion, seamlessly blending mentorship, experimentation, and the rich tapestry of tradition and reinvention. This year, the special edition—TernoCon Palaro—takes this mission a step further by spotlighting Filipino youth as both participants and inspirations.

With its joyful and competitive theme, Palaro challenges designers to innovate while honoring craftsmanship. More importantly, it serves as a platform where SM, Bench, and CCP actively engage Filipino youth, fostering meaningful connections to culture through creative and educational initiatives.

TernoCon Palaro is not just about design—it’s about empowering Filipino youth to carry forward their heritage with pride, creativity, and a fresh perspective. It’s a celebration of cultural continuity, mentorship, and the evolving spirit of a new generation inspired to keep Filipino tradition alive and vibrant. (SM Supermalls)
