SM’s Biggest Haul at the 38th International Coastal Clean Up: 100,000 Kilos of Trash Collected By over 17,000 Volunteers Across 15 SM Malls

SM Cares continues to drive active participation in ocean conservation by taking part once again in this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day last September 16, 2023, Saturday.

SM City Mindpro employee-volunteers together with partners from CENRO, OCENR, and various government agencies took the lead in the International Coastal Cleanup held in RT Lim Boulevard in Zamboanga City.

SM’s goal was to gather the biggest haul of trash and marine debris. This year’s efforts amounted to 75,033kg collected with the support of SM’s biggest participation since 2015 – 15 SM malls in 12 locations in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. This enabled more volunteers, totaling 17,026 SM employees and members of various sectors to join more clean-ups throughout the country.

908 kilos of trash were collected by volunteers during the coastal cleanup in Zamboanga City.

In Zamboanga City, 1,072 volunteers from various government and private agencies collected a total of 908 kilos of trash.

SM employee-volunteers worked together for a cleaner, greener future.

SM spearheads numerous cleanup drives throughout the year in support of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). In line with this year’s UN Ocean Decade Challenge, Sustainably Feed the Global Population, SM’s projects on water conservation, including the recycling and treatment of water from handwashing and rainwater harvesting, highlights the importance of community initiative in minimizing pollution, protecting fisheries and helping maintain potable water sources for everyone.

True to its commitment in supporting communities, SM City Mindpro employee-volunteers actively participate in environmental causes like the International Coastal Cleanup held last September 16 at RT Lim Boulevard, Zamboanga City.

“We all have a responsibility to help protect and safeguard our marine environment, its resources, and the communities it serves,” said SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for the Environment Engr. Liza B. Silerio. “A cleaner ocean means a better future for generations to come.”

SM targets biggest haul on International Coastal Cleanup Day with more malls nationwide

SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, together with SM Prime Holdings, Inc., is gearing up to gather the biggest haul of trash and marine debris at this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 16, 2023, at SM By the BAY and at multiple SM Malls across the country.

Over 11,000 volunteers are expected to gather at SM malls in support of International Coastal Clean Up Day.

SM’s expanded participation – 15 SM malls in 12 locations in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao – will enable more volunteers and employees to join the cleanup drive to help safeguard the marine environment and its resources in the communities it serves.

SM Prime calls on communities to sign up and join clean up drives with designated SM malls.

Since 2015, SM has been committed to supporting International Coastal Cleanup Day every September and mounting several cleanup drives throughout the year. The recent cleanup last June to celebrate World Environment Day and World Oceans Day generated 29,272 kilograms of trash across 5 SM malls nationwide. In addition, SM By the BAY, SM Mall of Asia, and SM Offices regularly conduct cleanup drives twice a month at the MOA Complex.

SM holds regular clean-ups and has supported the International Coastal Clean Up Day since 2015.

The coastal cleanup drive is one of the many projects mounted by SM Cares and leading real estate developer, SM Prime Holdings Inc., to support the marine environment and ocean conservation efforts of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

15 SM malls partner with the DENR and LGUs in mobilizing coastal clean-ups in 12 sites nationwide.
