Environmental Programs on Solid Waste Management - Electronic Waste Collection

The latest initiative under SM Supermalls’ solid waste management program, the Electronic Waste Collection (EWC) Program encourages tenant and customer participation in the responsible disposal of electronic waste or e-waste which is considered hazardous. This effort also encourages decluttering in households and brings to light conscious consumerism.

Location and Schedule
The public may voluntarily drop off their e-waste during mall hours at designated bins in 76 malls including SMDC Light. The EWC bins are located in Cyberzone areas and in information kiosks or concierge desks.

Accepted E-Waste
SM accepts old, broken and used mobile phones, phone chargers, power cords, computer wiring, commercial batteries, printer ink and toner cartridges, small gadgets such as keyboards, calculators, power banks, earphones and earbuds. The drop-off of gadgets larger than the bin may be coordinated with mall administration.

Recycling Process

Once the EWC bin is almost full, the mall administration will coordinate with the accredited transporter and treater for the pick-up of its contents. The company will separate the recyclable parts (metal, glass and plastic) from the non-recyclable material. Toxic chemicals will be treated while the recyclable parts will be brought to a partner facility for processing into raw material for reuse. (SM Cares)
