SM Supermalls Marks National Disaster Resilience Month with Capacity Building Events

In celebration of National Disaster Resilience Month this July, SM Supermalls is leading the private sector in promoting lifesaving skills and community preparedness through a series of impactful activities.

In line with the theme of KUMIKILOS Para sa Kahandaan, Kaligtasan at Katatagan, SM Supermalls embarks on a month-long multi-sectoral initiative for National Disaster Resilience Month.

The month opened with the first batch of Hands-Only CPR training at SM City Manila, targeting mall security personnel, janitors, and tenant employees. This initiative, under the campaign CPR: Corporate Preparedness and Resilience, is part of the Department of Health’s nationwide effort to promote public awareness and readiness in responding to cardiac emergencies. The next leg of the training will be held at SM San Lazaro on July 25.

Mall first responders and tenant employees learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques from representatives of the Department of Health and Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

“Emergencies can happen anywhere, and empowering everyday heroes with CPR skills can make the difference between life and death,” said Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President. “This is our commitment to making malls not just safe spaces, but resilient communities.”

In parallel, ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies – Philippine Network together with SM hosted a webinar series on basic non-life insurance to educate private sector members and micro, small and medium enterprises for key risk transfer mechanisms in disaster risk reduction strategies.

SM Supermalls mounts Ready, Set, Resilient: Youth DRR Training in partnership with ARISE Philippines and the Pasig City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

SM also supported the Ready, Set, Resilient: Youth DRR Training held last June 11 at the RED Training Center in Pasig City. Headlined by ARISE Philippine in partnership with the Pasig City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and Local Youth Development Office, the one-day workshop aimed to empower young leaders to take active roles in disaster risk reduction and resilience efforts.

Following this, SM Supermalls and SM GUUN Environmental Company addressed 180 ARISE Philippines members, partners and advocates in the Waste Management Webinar: Journey Towards a Waste-Free Future in a bid to encourage collective effort for a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future.

Subject matter experts answer questions on disaster risk reduction from Pasig students during the youth DRR training held in the city’s RED Training Center.

SM through ARISE Philippines next participated in the Department of Interior and Local Government-led Dagyaw Open Government and Participatory Governance Town Hall Meeting themed “BaBaYi: Kababaihan Bagtasin ang Ekonomiyang Likas-Kaya” for inclusive entrepreneurship.

To further strengthen emergency response capabilities, SM Supermalls will host an Incident Command System (ICS) training for SM Mall of Asia locators on July 28. ICS is a standardized approach to command, control, and coordination used during emergency response operations. It enables multiple stakeholders—mall management, tenants, and responders—to work together efficiently and effectively during crises.

Capping off the celebration, SM Supermalls, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection, will conduct a Fire Square Roadshow simultaneously in selected malls on July 31. This multi-mall event will feature interactive exhibitions showcasing fire extinguishment techniques, first aid and bandaging, knot tying, rappelling, and more—bringing essential emergency skills directly to the public in an engaging and educational format.

Celebrating 40 Super Years of Evolving With Every You, SM Supermalls—one of Southeast Asia’s largest mall developers—continuously evolving to lead the way in sustainable development by integrating green design, energy efficiency, disaster resilience, and environmental stewardship into its 88 malls in the Philippines, all while creating inclusive spaces that enrich communities, support climate action, and ensure a better, more sustainable future for generations of Filipino shoppers. SM Foundation and SM City Mindpro Champion Lifesaving Mission Through Blood Donation Drive

In observance of Blood Donor’s Month, SM Foundation and SM City Mindpro, in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross Zamboanga City Chapter, Western Mindanao Command, Philippine Air Force Tactical Operations Wing Western Mindanao, and the 530th Air Brigade Group, launched a two-day blood donation campaign on July 21-22, 2025 at the Cinema Lobby, Level 4 of the mall.

This initiative reflects SM’s unwavering commitment to nation-building through its Health and Wellness advocacy, aiming to help ensure an adequate and accessible blood supply in the city. By working closely with key military units and local health organizations, the campaign is geared towards saving lives while fostering a spirit of volunteerism and civic responsibility among Zamboangueños.

The bloodletting activity brings together SM workforce, affiliate and tenant employees, and uniformed personnel in a unified cause — to give the gift of life through voluntary blood donation. It also serves as a timely celebration of the National Blood Donor’s Month, honoring the silent heroes whose donations are critical to emergency care, surgeries, and treatment of diseases.

“We are grateful for the strong collaboration with our partners in health and public service. Through this drive, we are not only collecting blood — we are also cultivating compassion and community resilience,” said Aileen Ann Villa-Enriquez, SM City Mindpro Mall Manager.

SM Foundation, the social good arm of SM, continues to roll out blood donation drives across its malls nationwide as part of its corporate social responsibility thrusts.

TernoCon Takes Over MOA Sky Football Field

Heritage fashion gets sporty in this open-air cultural runway

Step into a new era of Filipiniana fashion as TernoCon Palaro unfolds on the grand turf of the MOA Sky Football Pitch this July 27, 2025. With the theme “TernoCon Palaro,” this year’s showcase invites audiences to experience the terno like never before—fluid, sporty, and alive with movement.

What happens when Filipino tradition meets the playful energy of a football field? The result is a striking visual celebration of heritage reinterpreted for a generation in motion.

An Inspired Collaboration: SM Supermalls, Bench, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines

Following the momentum of past TernoCon special edition projects, including 2024’s Kasarinlan, Kultura, Kasuotan and 2023’s Paskong Ternocon, this year’s edition continues the strong creative alliance between SM Supermalls, Bench, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Together, these three institutions are reshaping how cultural narratives are told through fashion—bringing the terno beyond the runway and into the public sphere in powerful, unexpected ways.

Meet the Designers: Contemporary Visions of Filipiniana

This year, six trailblazing Filipino designers take center field with collections that reflect personal heritage, regional identity, and bold design philosophies. Each one presents a capsule collection composed of modern takes on the terno, balintawak, kimona, and barong reimagined through the lens of sport and movement.

Hannah Adrias

Gold medalist of Ternocon 2020, Hannah Adrias continues to reimagine Filipiniana for her generation in a collection that taps into early 1980s aesthetics through a contemporary lens.

Glyn Alley Magtibay

Glyn Alley Magtibay made a strong impression as a Finalist in Ternocon 2023 with her ternos that utilized X-ray films. For Palaro, her collection called Intramurals conjures the spirit of school sporting events combined with the graphic boldness of hand-woven indigenous textiles.

Jo Ann Bitagcol

Jo Ann Bitagcol blurs the line between formal and casual dressing as well as traditional boundaries of men and women’s wear in a collection called Liga. While tapping into our collective idea of nostalgia, she still manages to infuse garments with a sense of ease and contemporaneity.

Len Cabili

Len Cabili of Filip+Inna is at the forefront of slow fashion and indigenous crafts in the Philippines. For her collection called Basketball Parabola, she taps into the country’s obsession with the sport and the curved lines that are central to the game.

Renz Reyes

Renz Reyes translated the intricate details of traditional Filipino garments such as the traje de mestiza, terno, and barong into the contemporary language of linearity, streamlined sports silhouettes, and utilitarian aspect of tailoring.

Carl Jan Cruz

Carl Jan Cruz’s Palaro collection is rooted in the idea of transforming found objects, specifically found garments and archival Bench T-shirts made in the Philippines, into something intentional, experimental, and playful, yet still grounded in the brand’s DNA and the essence of the terno and other forms of Filipiniana.

The MOA Sky Football Pitch: Fashion’s Newest Playground

For the first time in Ternocon history, the show will take place on an outdoor sports field. The MOA Sky Football Pitch becomes more than just a venue—it’s a symbol of how the terno continues to evolve. With the Manila Bay sunset as its backdrop, the event promises a visual spectacle where movement, fashion, and Filipino identity intersect.

TernoCon’s Ongoing Legacy

Since its debut, TernoCon has been a vibrant creative laboratory for Filipino fashion, seamlessly blending mentorship, experimentation, and the rich tapestry of tradition and reinvention. This year, the special edition—TernoCon Palaro—takes this mission a step further by spotlighting Filipino youth as both participants and inspirations.

With its joyful and competitive theme, Palaro challenges designers to innovate while honoring craftsmanship. More importantly, it serves as a platform where SM, Bench, and CCP actively engage Filipino youth, fostering meaningful connections to culture through creative and educational initiatives.

TernoCon Palaro is not just about design—it’s about empowering Filipino youth to carry forward their heritage with pride, creativity, and a fresh perspective. It’s a celebration of cultural continuity, mentorship, and the evolving spirit of a new generation inspired to keep Filipino tradition alive and vibrant. (SM Supermalls)
