Communities Unite at R.T. Lim Boulevard for SM-Led Coastal Cleanup Drive

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, 07 June 2026 — Demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and ocean conservation, SM City Mindpro and SM City Zamboanga successfully led a large-scale Coastal Cleanup Drive on June 7 along R.T. Lim Boulevard in celebration of World Oceans Day, bringing together communities, government agencies, academic institutions, and environmental advocates in a united effort to protect the city's coastal ecosystem.

A total of 925 volunteers participated in the activity, collecting 988.5 kilograms of waste from the shoreline. The initiative highlighted the power of collective action in addressing marine pollution and preserving the health of local waterways.

The cleanup was conducted in partnership with the City Government of Zamboanga and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) – Zamboanga City, reinforcing a shared vision of creating cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities.

The coastal cleanup drew enthusiastic participation from volunteers representing government offices, educational institutions, civic groups, uniformed personnel, and private organizations. United by a common goal of environmental protection, participants worked hand in hand to help preserve the city's coastline, showcasing the spirit of volunteerism and collective responsibility in caring for the oceans and the environment.

The event commenced with a brief orientation emphasizing proper waste segregation, volunteer safety, and the importance of protecting marine environments. Participants then spread across designated cleanup zones, collecting plastic waste, discarded packaging materials, bottles, fishing debris, and other pollutants that threaten marine biodiversity and coastal communities.

“This initiative reflects the bayanihan spirit that unites our communities in caring for the environment,” said Aileen Ann Villa-Enriquez. “By working together, we not only clean our coastlines but also raise awareness about the critical role each individual plays in protecting our oceans for future generations.”

The Coastal Cleanup Drive forms part of the SM Green Movement, SM Supermalls' long-term sustainability platform that encourages environmental responsibility through programs focused on waste management, climate action, resource conservation, and community engagement.

Together, SM City Mindpro, SM City Zamboanga, and its partners reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding coastal resources and advancing sustainable practices that contribute to the well-being of present and future generations.

Over 50,000 Volunteers Join SM Cares Coastal Cleanup Drives

SM Cares champions the spirit of bayanihan as youth volunteers lead the coastal cleanup—proving that every small act can create waves of change.

SM Supermalls continues to advance its commitment to environmental sustainability with the successful rollout of its 2025 coastal cleanup initiatives, culminating in the youth-centered National Day for Youth Climate in Action: “Bayanihan with a Vibe” event held at SM By the Bay on November 23. This year-long campaign mobilized more than 50,000 youth and community volunteers, removing over 210,000 kilograms of waste from coastlines nationwide—one of the program’s biggest collective efforts to date.

Youth leaders take the frontlines in SM Cares coastal cleanup, driving collective action for cleaner, healthier coastlines.

Throughout 2025, SM Cares—the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls—led major marine conservation activities, including the World Oceans Day celebration in June, the International Coastal Cleanup in September, and sustained weekly cleanups in select malls. These initiatives continue to amplify public commitment to the #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign, strengthening SM’s advocacy for clean oceans and empowered communities.

Taking action today for a greener tomorrow, young leaders join SM Cares’ coastal cleanup to protect our oceans and inspire change.

“Caring for our coastlines goes beyond a clean-up activity—it’s a sustained commitment to the communities and future generations who depend on these waters. We’re inspired by the passion of the youth and volunteers who showed up all year. Their energy reminds us that when we come together, small acts can create waves of change,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Cares Program Director for the Environment.

This year’s “Bayanihan with a Vibe” placed youth front and center, blending coastal cleanup activities with interactive learning and entertainment. Volunteers from youth organizations, community groups, local government units, partner NGOs, and SM employees participated in environmental education sessions, waste collection activities, and a DJ-led gathering that celebrated collective climate action. The event reinforced the message that young people play a critical role in shaping a more sustainable future, with SM Cares providing platforms that inspire them to lead meaningful change.

Youth bring the bayanihan vibe to life—joining SM Cares’ coastal cleanup while enjoying music and climate action in one meaningful celebration.

Across all of SM’s 2025 coastal cleanup efforts, the strong and diverse turnout—from students to families, local partners, and corporate volunteers—demonstrates the growing public commitment to the #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign. By integrating sustainability into both its corporate operations and community programs, SM Supermalls continues to build a culture of shared responsibility for the environment.

A vibrant mix of purpose and energy as young changemakers take part in SM Cares’ coastal cleanup, moving to the bayanihan vibe with music and action.

Every cleanup is a step toward a cleaner, greener Philippines. With thousands united under the spirit of bayanihan, SM Supermalls reaffirms its commitment to building a waste-free future—one coastline at a time. SM invites communities nationwide to join the #SMWasteFreeFuture movement and continue making waves for a sustainable tomorrow.
